Ocasio-Cortez rođena je 13. oktobra 1989. u Bronxu, New York City (New York, SAD).[8] Njen otac Sergio Ocasio, po zanimanju arhitekt, također je iz Bronxa, a njena majka Blanca Ocasio-Cortez je iz Portorika.[9][10] Do svoje pete godine, živjela je s porodicom u Parkchesteru, novom gradu u jugoistočnom dijelu Bronxa.
