It's taken 4 G-Shocks to find one that meets my definition of a decent watch. The first three I owned (a DW-5600E-1, a GD350-1B, and a G-2400) were all nice, but suffered from the two common problems I have with G-Shocks - they're bulky and they have uncomfortable straps. I also hate the essays of text written all over most of them, but I'll keep that out of this review today.
When the GA-2100 was launched the hype started to grow, and so did the prices. I managed to pay too much above retail for mine, but not as much as they're now selling for (~AUD$300). I was immediately pleased with how petite it was compared to the others - at about 12mm at its thickest, it became a G-Shock that could fit as well as any other mechanical sports watch. So I could finally say this watch is no longer in the 'bulky child's toy' category.
As I wore the watch for a few weeks, the core problem emerged with the watch that made me sell all of my other G-Shocks - the awful uncomfortable strap. Whilst the lug-to-lug length of the watch fits my wrist quite well, the forced downwards angle of the strap at the lugs means it only can really fit a very specific shape of wrist. Without owning that wrist shape, you'll end up with odd gaps at either end or the strap digging in at the sides of the wrist. A full day of wear would find me taking the watch off a lot to give my wrist breaks, or adjusting between the 4th and 5th position on the strap trying to find a Goldilocks fit.
Some love the resin straps of Casio watches - I've tried and failed to like them - they just pale in comparison to metal bracelets. And lo and behold - Chinese manufacturers have kindly come to the rescue to bring conversion kits for the DW5600 and GA-2100 lines of G-Shocks. I ordered one immediately ('Style A'), and sat frustrated for about the 9 weeks it took to arrive in the post.
Converting this watch to a steel variant is essential - it brings the watch in line with what I always desired from a G-Shock; ruggedness, the reliability of quartz, timers, complications, and comfortable. The steel casing and bracelet add that last missing piece of Genta-esque aesthetic, with the wrap of steel forming against the shape of the wrist to bring in that needed comfort. The additional weight is barely noticeable as the quartz movement and carbon fiber case still take out that typical weight found with water resistant automatics.
This watch is far from perfect though. The lume is so abysmal that they might as well not have bothered (much like the Casio MDV-106). The absence of lume on the hour indices is a missed opportunity. There is a back-light provided, and whilst functional it does spray light out the side in a wasteful way (almost like the placement of the LED was an afterthought). The length of the hands could be a little longer and sharper to fill the dial better. And the digital display works like most inverted digital displays - utterly unreadable unless you're looking at it on the perfect angle.
Would I buy this watch again? Absolutely. Despite its many flaws, the GA-2100 is still an amazing watch, and still the best G-Shock I've owned yet. I really want to see the price come down back to the RRP though, as the combination of the currently inflated prices and the steel conversion kit means it's about AUD$400 - inching close to the stupidly overpriced genuine steel G-Shocks offered by Casio. Some wish for a solar variant of the watch - I'm not so convinced I want that. If Casio added solar, I know they'd also bump the price up quite a lot too - so much so that I'd really want to see the lume situation improved for that added cost.
If Casio were to pay attention to how the watch community has leapt onto this watch as the poor man's Royal Oak, I think they'd make a killing bringing out a full steel variant with more design cues taken from the high-end sports watches that are in such artificially short supply today. For now we just have to make do with conversion kits to bridge that gap.
P.s. there are now conversion kits that have bracelets that look closer to the Royal Oak (the '2nd New' variant). Once mine arrives from the slow boat from China I'll provide an update on how it compares to the first series of conversion kits. And I've got the Red GA-2100 arriving shortly too, to see how it compares.
